San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey missed practice on Monday. The team said he was held out with “tightness.” They did not give any more detail on what that means.

By itself, this does not sound serious. But because of who McCaffrey is and his injury history, every missed practice gets attention.

The team is not worried

The 49ers made it clear they are just being careful. Offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak said McCaffrey is on his usual rep count for camp and that everything is on track. He said the veteran will be fine. The team has managed his practice load all summer to keep him fresh for Week 1.

McCaffrey has been through this before. In the past, he has pointed out that when a player with his injury history sits out, people tend to blow it out of proportion. This looks like one of those cases, at least for now.

Why people still watch closely

The worry comes from recent years. McCaffrey is 30 years old and entering his 10th season. In 2024, he missed most of the year with calf and Achilles problems and then a season-ending knee injury.

He bounced back in a big way in 2025. He played all 17 games, ran for 1,202 yards and 10 touchdowns, and added 924 receiving yards and seven scores. He also led the NFL with 413 touches from scrimmage. That is a huge workload for any back, let alone one his age. So the 49ers have good reason to protect him now.

The bigger problem: a thin backfield

Here is what makes this more than a minor note. The 49ers are banged up at running back behind McCaffrey. Jordan James broke his ribs early in camp. Kaelon Black is dealing with an adductor injury. Isaac Guerendo is out with a torn pectoral muscle. That leaves Patrick Taylor, Sincere McCormick, and Khalil Herbert as the healthy options.

San Francisco spent the offseason hoping to find a reliable backup to take some load off McCaffrey. Instead, injuries have hit the whole group. That makes keeping McCaffrey healthy even more important.

Star pass rusher Nick Bosa also sat out again on Monday with soreness as he works back from a torn ACL.

Bottom line

For now, there is no sign this is a real setback. The 49ers are simply managing McCaffrey’s reps with the season close. But with his injury history and a short-handed backfield, this is a situation fans and fantasy managers will keep an eye on until he is back on the field.
