India has taken a big action in this and has decided to stop the water supply to Pakistan. For your information, let us tell you that a water treaty was signed between India and Pakistan in 1960 in which water was divided between the two countries. The document of this division was signed by both the countries and the mediation was done by the World Bank.
What rules were implemented in this treaty?
In this water treaty between India and Pakistan, some rules were also implemented which both the countries have to follow. In this treaty, rivers were divided and the rights of water use were also determined. Apart from this, a permanent Indus Commission was formed which was formed to settle any dispute arising in this treaty along with the rules of this treaty.
Apart from this, conditions were also set for construction in this project and rules for sharing all its data were also implemented by India. There is a lot of tension going on between India and Pakistan at this time and both the countries are standing on the brink of war. Here, this treaty has been temporarily suspended by India. After this, a statement has also come from Pakistan that if the water is stopped by India, then it will be considered an act of war.
How was the division of rivers done?
In the Indus Water Treaty, the rivers were divided in which 80 percent of the water of the western rivers was given to Pakistan. This includes the water of Indus, Jhelum and Chenab rivers. These three rivers are known as western rivers.
Apart from this, the water of the eastern rivers was given to India and these include Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers. India was also given the right to use 20 percent of the water of the western rivers, in which India can use the water of these rivers for agriculture or other domestic purposes.
In this treaty, dams can be built on the eastern rivers by India and any kind of project can be constructed. Apart from this, projects can also be built by India on the western rivers, but a condition was kept that the water of Pakistan should not be affected.
