The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting, signing him off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad, according to the source.

Murphy-Bunting brings extensive NFL experience to Pittsburgh, having appeared in 82 regular-season games with 65 starts and recorded 11 career interceptions.

The move comes after Pittsburgh traded Joey Porter Jr., creating a need for additional experience in its cornerback group.

Murphy-Bunting originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick by Tampa Bay in 2019. He became part of the Buccaneers' Super Bowl-winning team following the 2020 season and played an important role during that postseason run.

In four playoff games during that run, Murphy-Bunting recorded 19 tackles, three interceptions and five pass deflections.

Murphy-Bunting Had Just Returned to Tampa Bay

The veteran cornerback had only recently returned to the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay signed him to its practice squad in August after he had been released by the Arizona Cardinals.

At the time, reports indicated Murphy-Bunting would have an opportunity to be elevated to the active roster. His return also reunited him with the organization where he began his NFL career and won a Super Bowl.

His stay in Tampa Bay's practice squad, however, was short-lived with the Steelers now adding him to their secondary.

A Veteran Coming Off a Difficult Cardinals Stint

Murphy-Bunting's time in Arizona was complicated by an injury situation that resulted in him being placed on the Non-Football Injury list in May 2025.

According to the source, the designation ruled him out for the entire 2025 season and meant the Cardinals were not required to pay his $8 million salary for that season. He ultimately received $1.2 million.

Murphy-Bunting had signed a three-year, $25.5 million contract with Arizona before the 2024 season. The deal included $17.39 million in guaranteed money, although he ultimately collected $11.3 million of that amount.

The specifics of his injury were not publicly disclosed by the Cardinals or Murphy-Bunting, according to the source.

Steelers Get Experience in the Secondary

For Pittsburgh, the addition gives the secondary a cornerback with substantial starting experience and postseason credentials.

Murphy-Bunting's career includes his role on Tampa Bay's Super Bowl-winning team, along with more than 80 regular-season appearances and double-digit career interceptions.

His move to Pittsburgh gives him another opportunity in the AFC after his recent return to Tampa Bay and his difficult stint in Arizona.
